Chiropractic treatments can reduce the pain caused by injured muscles. Acute muscle injuries are the result of trauma to a part of the body, like a hard blow during contact sports. Repetitive muscle injuries are caused by overusing muscles, like a baseball pitcher damaging muscles in their shoulder due to throwing a ball countless times over the course of their career.

Your muscles can even become injured due to sitting down for prolonged periods regularly. It can lead to posture-related neck or back pain.

How chiropractic care helps reduce pain caused by damaged muscles

The body sends distress signals to the brain whenever an area is infected, irritated, or injured. The immune system responds to the problem by creating inflammation. Inflammation is a critical part of the body’s natural defense system, and it helps with the healing process. However, chronic inflammation leads to myriad health issues.

A misalignment typically causes muscle pain in the back. The misalignment leads to joints and muscles in the back having to do extra work to compensate for the issue.

Chiropractic treatments

There are multiple treatments that a chiropractic care provider can use to address pain and inflammation in the muscles. These treatments also help speed up the healing process. Treatments that a chiropractor might recommend for muscle inflammation and pain include the following:

Cold therapy/cryotherapy: This is typically one of the first treatments used to alleviate pain and inflammation in an injured muscle. The cold constricts blood vessels in the affected area, slowing down the blood flow there. This helps reduce inflammation, pain, and bruising.

Heat therapy: Applying heat to an injured muscle improves blood and oxygen flow to the injured tissues. This can speed up the healing process, and it can also reduce pain and stiffness from the muscles. A stiff, injured muscle limits a person’s mobility.

Ultrasound therapy: This involves using sound waves to stimulate deep inside tissues. These warm up the area being treated, improving blood flow to the area and promoting healing.

Phonophoresis and Iontophoresis: These treatments are used to push topical medications deep into muscle tissues. Iontophoresis treatments do this with electric waves, while phonophoresis uses ultrasound waves.

Electric stimulation: This involves stimulating injured tissues with electrical currents. It reduces inflammation and alleviates pain.

Trigger point therapy: This involves applying pressure directly to trigger areas in damaged muscles. The trigger point is typically the source of the pain being experienced. Stimulating it can bring significant relief.

Kinesio taping: This involves strategically placing tape on muscles to rearrange tissues and take pressure off of stressed or strained muscles.

Chiropractic adjustments: This involves manipulating muscles, joints, and bones to alleviate pressure on injured muscles. It can help reposition damaged joints, reduce pain, and promote healing.
