What to Expect During a Visit to a Chiropractor

Wondering if you should make an appointment with a chiropractor to find out if chiropractic treatments will work when it comes to addressing your musculoskeletal problem? Many people who are experiencing pain in their muscles, bones, ligaments, tendons and/or nerves will first try traditional medicine to address their pain. If this does not work, they will research alternative treatment options.
About chiropractors
Looking into alternative treatment options? According to Spine-Health, a chiropractor is a health care professional focused on the diagnosis and treatment of neuromuscular disorders, with an emphasis on treatment through manual adjustment and/or manipulation of the spine. Chiropractors can treat a number of musculoskeletal problems, with back pain, neck pain and knee pain being common. Ready to learn what you can expect during your first chiropractic visit?
What to expect during a visit to a chiropractor
The information below includes details on what someone can expect when visiting a chiropractor.
First visit
During the first visit, a patient is required to fill out paperwork, as this allows the chiropractor to understand more about the patient’s health history. It also allows them to learn about their current condition and any symptoms they are experiencing. The patient will then be physically evaluated, requiring them to follow the chiropractor's instructions so they can evaluate their overall physical condition. Many patients receive their first chiropractic treatment during their first visit, as a treatment plan is made during a first chiropractic visit.
Chiropractic treatments
A spinal adjustment is the most common type of treatment performed by a professional chiropractor. The patient will lie and/or sit down on a special table, allowing the chiropractor to make adjustments to the patient’s body that allow for proper spinal alignment. While these adjustments are not painful, they do require the chiropractor to make quick thrusting movements, which may be startling until the patient becomes more accustomed to the spinal adjustment procedure.
There are a number of different types of spinal adjustments that a chiropractor can choose from, with the direct thrust technique being the most common. Other types of spinal adjustments include spinal mobilization, muscle energy techniques, cervical spine manipulation and articulatory.
At-home exercises, nutritional advice
When warranted, a chiropractor will provide their patient with at-home exercises they need to perform in order to help them recover from their particular health issue. Any exercises prescribed to a patient need to be carefully followed in order for them to experience optimal results. Chiropractors can also offer their patients necessary nutritional advice, as many foods can be specifically used for the goal of improving one’s overall health.
